Dr. Grinspoon and Other Cannabis Research Pioneers
We know a lot about cannabis today such as it offers neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory and anti-cancerous properties that could drastically change how we treat, prevent and cure illnesses. We know that it works directly with the endocannabinoid system found within every human and mammal’s body. We know that there are at least 80 different phytocannabinoids within cannabis such as THC, CBD, CVG, and CBN and also that our bodies make cannabinoids of their own known as endocannabinoids.
We know all of this and much more despite the fact that the federal government has tried to hinder marijuana research as much as they possibly could over the past eight decades. There are however a small handful of doctors and scientists who have had the opportunity to research this miraculous plant. Let’s take a closer look at two of the individuals that we have to thank for the knowledge that we have today regarding our favorite plant.
Isolating Cannabinoids and the Discovery of the Endocannabinoid System- Dr. Raphael Mechoulam
According to medical journals Dr. Raphael Mechoulam was the first person to synthesize and discover cannabinoids within the cannabis plant, specifically THC. Dr. Mechoulam later went on to also be credited for discovering the Endocannabinoid System in 1992. After discovering cannabinoids Raphael made another amazing discovering in 1992 that ultimately led to the discovery of the Endocannabinoid System. This discovery was of the human neurotransmitter Anandamide. Anandamide is an endogenous cannabinoid neurotransmitter meaning that it is naturally occurring within the body. This neurotransmitter works hand in hand with the CB1 and CB2 receptors in the endocannabinoid system to provide the many medical benefits that we see people gaining from cannabis consumption through a variety of different methods.
Marijuana Truths Were Calling Dr. Grinspoon
In the nineteen-sixties when the consumption of cannabis increased dramatically within the public eye Dr. Lester Grinspoon, a legendary psychiatrist who practiced at the Massachusetts Mental Health Center in Boston for 40 years and was an Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the Harvard Medical School, decided to turn his research efforts towards this trending plant. Originally his research was focused on providing scientific proof that the dangerous assumptions that we had surrounding this plant were true. What he found, however, was the complete opposite and his research forever changed his opinion and viewpoint of cannabis.
Dr. Grinspoon has authored or co-authored several different psychedelic and cannabis-related publications including Marijuana The Forbidden Medicine, Marihuana Reconsidered and Psychedelic Reflections. Dr. Grinspoon currently still runs two different websites focused on education surrounding marijuana. You can check these out at RXmarijuana.com and marijuana-uses.com. The research that Dr. Grinspoon has performed pertaining to cannabis in combination with his writing work and cannabis advocacy efforts has led him to receive several different notable awards over the years.
These are just two of the individuals that have been involved with the research surrounding cannabis thus far. As laws progress we are starting to see the prohibition of cannabis come to an end in many places around the globe. This is opening up the doors for more research to be performed and more discoveries pertaining to cannabis to evolve.
