My Five on Why

One of the most common questions that I receive as a writer, activist, and advocate for cannabis is the question of why cannabis (in both its psychoactive and non-psychoactive form) should be legalized in my opinion. This is always a much simpler question to ask for others than it is for me to answer as the list of reasons why in my opinion are almost endless. WhiIe I could go on and on for days about the multitude of different reasons why everyone around the world should have legal access to this plant I will save you that story and answer the question with 5 simple reasons.

1. It’s Medicine

The medicinal benefits that cannabis offers are undeniable. There are countless patient stories from around the world that clearly show cannabis is saving lives. From children who suffer from severe forms of epilepsy such as Alexis Bortell, teenagers who suffer from gastrointestinal disorders such as Crohn’s Disease like Coltyn Turner to grow adults who suffer from cancer, cannabis is proving itself as a very effective medicine.

2. It’s Nonfatal

In over ten thousand years of documented history surrounding this plant, there has never been a single case in which cannabis was the sole contributing factor to a fatality. This isn’t something that can be said about many other substances which are perfectly legal such as potatoes, Tylenol, alcohol, and tobacco. Cannabis, in fact, may very well be the safest substance known to man.

3. It’s a Plant

No matter how you look at it cannabis is a plant and there isn’t a single reason why nature should ever be made illegal. Unfortunately, one of the biggest reasons why the government has held its strong hold over this substance for so many years is because it is a plant and can be easily grown by almost anyone in any environment with a little time and patience.

4. It Could End World Hunger

Cannabis in the form of hemp is super versatile and can be utilized for a number of different things. One of those is a food source. Not only is hemp a phenomenal food source it offers an incredible amount of nutrients. The best part is, hemp can be grown in just about any environment meaning even those who live in some of the harshest environments around the world where many other plants won’t survive could grow hemp and supply food for their families.

5. It Could End Deforestation

Another use of hemp is textiles. Wood, cardboard, paper, clothing and even plastic products can be replaced with products made from hemp.  This could end our need for destroying our forests and the habitats that exist within them simply for materialistic items.
