Research Woes and the Plaguing Opioid Epidemic
Anecdotal evidence is abundant when it comes to cannabis’ ability to conquer opioid addiction. There are politicians and scientists begging for more research to be performed on this subject as the opioid epidemic across the United States continues to spiral out of control. Despite the fact that cannabis is legal in more than have the states in the U.S for medical purposes and the fact that the government has a patent stating that cannabinoids offer medical benefits, cannabis is still considered a schedule one drug according to the Controlled Substances Act which makes researching it very difficult.
When research is approved, only cannabis grown by the United States government can be utilized in the studies which is a major problem. We recently saw this with Dr. Sue Sisley who received a shipment of cannabis for a study on PTSD and the cannabis was very poor quality and filled with mold, pesticides, and mildew. While politicians are screaming for more research there are people dying on a regular and daily basis due to the opiate epidemic that is plaguing our nation as well as countries around the world. To throw the All-American hypocrisy into the equation the FDA and DEA just approved a synthetic cannabis based treatment that contains THC for schedule 2 status admitting that it offers medical benefits.
The company that produces the drug known as Syndros is known as Insys Therapeutics. If you are familiar with this name it is probably due to the fact that you have heard the stories about one of their drugs that is killing people every day that goes by the name of Fentanyl. That’s right the manufacturers of Fentanyl just got the first-ever FDA schedule 2 approval for a cannabis based drug that contains THC yet they continue to deny people access to the natural plant which has no adverse side effects other than the occasional case of the munchies, sleepiness, anxiety or nausea which can all be cured with a nap and some food.
Lives could be saved if only the government would admit what they already know and that is cannabis is a safe and effective medication for a multitude of different conditions including chronic pain which is the number one reason why people are prescribed and become addicted to opioid based medications. Instead they are choosing to help line the pockets of pharmaceutical corporations by giving them control over medical cannabis rather than simply allowing people legal access to self-medicate with a plant that they can easily grow at home themselves.
There are many miraculous things that I can speak of when it comes to cannabis from hemp’s ability to clean the air and the planet to cannabis’s ability to provide relief from various different ailments but the one thing that truly gets to me about cannabis being illegal is the simple fact that in its 10,000-year history it has never once killed a single human being. This is not something that can be said about hardly any other substance known to man. That alone should be enough to remove it from the Controlled Substances Act altogether and to end the prohibition surrounding cannabis of once and for all!
